Mike Ruiz | The Chairman with the Funny Hat | Tell Me About YOUR Apple Festival

Growing up on Walnut Street, Mike Ruiz had one of the best seats in town.

He described his family's home as a "reviewing stand," where generations gathered to watch the Apple Festival Parade roll by. For Mike, the Apple Festival Parade has always been the most special part of the festival.

A fun fact: an illustration of Mike in his signature hat appears in Tell Me About Your Apple Festival. Before we ever met in person, we spoke by phone about permissions for the book. His enthusiasm for the Apple Festival was so infectious that I remember being surprised to learn he was a lawyer. (I say that affectionately as someone who's married to one.) It wasn't until later that I realized he was the very Mike featured in the book.

Mike is absolutely delightful, and his passion for the Apple Festival is unmistakable. Whether he's reflecting on growing up on Walnut Street or sharing stories from his time as Apple Festival Chairman, his energy and love for this community shine through.

Thank you, Mike, for sharing your Murphysboro Apple Festival story.
