Some people have a way of making you feel like you've known them for years. Mayor Will Stephens is one of those people.

This was the first time we'd ever met, but we skipped the small talk and went straight into a meaningful conversation. Will has a remarkable ability to connect with people, and I imagine that's one of the qualities that makes him such an effective mayor.

His perspective on the Murphysboro Apple Festival is a unique one. He sees not only the traditions and celebrations, but also what happens behind the scenes as the city comes together to welcome thousands of visitors.

One thing Will shared that didn't make the final edit has stayed with me. During Apple Festival week, he said the city hardly receives any complaints. People seem to respect that week almost like Christmas. Everyone knows it's something special, and for a few days, people are simply... happier.

As we talked, I also learned we're raising children at the same stage of life. Will's twin boys are the same age as Betty, and it was fun to imagine them growing up with many of the same Apple Festival memories that shaped our own childhoods.
